Remember this? Well, the pictures finally arrived:
Every few weeks one or the other of us would check in on Eric Ogden's facebook page to see if anything was happening with this project. He's certainly busy enough--photographing every politician, movie star and musician in the news, one after another. But there was never a peep about a collection of people and places in Flint. Simon finally decided to take the bull by the horns (as it were, if you will)and tweeted Eric Ogden directly. And, amazingly, he answered! (It helped that we work at UM-Flint as his dad did and he claims to have fond memories of running about the place when he was little.) Apparently the book is still in the works but he sent these along as payment for Thomas's time. Simon took pictures of the pictures. You'll have to take our word for it that they look even better "live."

Almost soulful. The artist consults his muse!

Eric Ogden's photos are always side-lit--so "moody" seems to be his thing. What I also like about his work is that he doesn't alter the natural appearance of the kids he photos: if they have dirty feet, messy hair, or stained clothes, then that is how he takes them. I think the pictures look more "real" even though, with the lighting, they look surreal. He got Thomas at the perfect age, too: just leaving the "little boy" stage but not quite a teen. We really miss those days....
I bet he can still have that look sometimes. If not this minute, it won't leave him. I only really got my son back when he met his woman. So, you may have to wait a bit. My Tom was nearly 40 when he finally (I hope) settled down. That young Thomas is still there, but a lot more going on just now.
